St. Anton am Arlberg The town St. Anton is located at the edge of the Arlberg, 1284m above sea level. There are 2553 inhabitants (2017). The commune is a part of the province Tyrol and bordering to Vorarlberg. St. Anton is one of the worlds leading ski resorts and also known as the cradle of alpine skiing. With its 3248 meters, the Kuchenspitze is the highest mountain in the Arlberg area. The most top reachable point is the Valluga (2811m). There are plenty of hotels in St. Anton nowadays.


Historical development

Hotel Post was the first hotel in St. Anton, opening in 1897. The owners were providing 100 beds, central heating, electric lights, a billiard lounge, a bowling alley and a tennis court. In 1919, there have been space for 328 guests in St. Anton. WW1 stopped the development, unfortunately. In 1901, the first ski association was found, and ski races were held. Hannes Schneider invented the “Arlbergtechnik” which was a revolution for the modern ski sport. In 1926, St. Anton had space for 664 guests. In the thirties, Franck Arnold was shot several movies in St. Anton, which influenced the ski sport for sustainable. Therefore, the number of guests increased rapidly again. In 1934, 55.000 overnight stays and 500 rooms had been counted.


After WW2, tourism in the Arlberg area was growing again. The official count of overnight stays in 1975 was 560.000 related to 5658 guest beds per year. By 1995 the number increased to 900.000 overnight stays related to 8500 guest beds. In 2001, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships were held in St. Anton. 350.000 visitors came to see the event.

Before the Championships, several buildings and infrastructure were built to meet the needs of the visitors. The Congress-Center Arlberg-, the Nassereinbahn, the railway station, the stadium and many hotels have been extended or were built new.
